ATA studio created 8 toilets in the NIUSHOUSHAN Cultural Tourism Zone.

How were you commissioned?:
Through the program competition.

What was the brief from the client and how much were they involved?:
The client is Nanjing NIUSHOUSHAN cultural tourism company.The Client want to build 8 toilets in the NIUSHOUSHAN Cultural Tourism Zone. The purpose is to provide service facilities for tourists. The form of the toilets are well combined with the natural environment and the human culture environment, And help to enhance the awareness of the tourists take good care of public facilities. And the client evaluated and adopt the architect's design.

The influence factors are landform, attractions style, climatic conditions and cost factors.

Understanding of local materials and how the building be adapt to the site.

Can you explain the layout of the project:
The 8 toilets were built in the vicinity of 8 scenic spots. They were located in different environments such as sloping land, woodland, lowlands, lakeside grassland, etc. The area of each building is about 200 square meters.Considering the durability and low maintenance, the buildings are reinforced concrete frame structures.

What problems or challenges did you face?:
How the 8 toilets can be integrated into the natural environment? How can the visitors get new experience when they use these toilets ? Our solution was to allow the building to adapt to the terrain. The design focus on strengthening the sense of spatial experience in the process of entering the building.

What do you feel were the most unusual design elements of the project?:
The NIUSHOUSHAN Cultural Tourism Zone is closely associated with Buddhist culture. Shakya Mani's skull relic was placed here. The mountains are covered with pine and bamboo.People don't not believe that's a toilet beacause of Zen. In the process of using the toilet, tourist get the wonderful feelings. Because of the elegant environment and daily maintenance. The uncivilized behavior of tourists was significantly reduced.

How do you think this project is pushing design forward? What makes it special?:
With the increasing material abundance in China today, people have higher demands for the facilities in public toilet, an area that has long been neglected in China. By the eight different designs of toilets in Nanjing Niushoushan Culture and Tourism Zone, we try to explore and experiment on the possibilities of public toilet with regard to investment and construction conditions. After careful surveys on the proposed sites for the eight toilets, we decided on the idea to take each toilet site as a tourist service spot. Apart from the functions of the toilet, each spot is also a rest area for tourists and equipped with control facilities and management rooms. Land is thus saved. Tourists can enjoy convenient and comfortable use of toilets, and at the same time can take a rest, view the scenery and recharge themselves.

Building materials are all made in China. The exterior wall of the building mainly uses ALC block and LOW-E glass curtain wall. Exterior decoration material include bamboo, Weathering steel plate, mirror stainless steel, aluminum plate, vertical green wall, glulam made of bamboo, etc. The interior wall mainly uses ALC block.
