The timeline of the iPhone design

iPhone 6/6 Plus (Eighth Generation)

Launched: September 2014

Apple returned in 2014 with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, seeing the biggest modifications in design and features since the leap from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5.

The most prominent change in the eighth generation was undoubtedly the screen size, with the iPhone 6's display soaring from 4 inches to 4.7 inches. Apple also upped the resolution from the 1136 x 640 of previous iPhones to 1334 x 750.

The iPhone 6 Plus was a lot larger, featuring a massive 5.5-inch display, Apple's first venture into the ‘phablet’ market. The iPhone 6 Plus also received a resolution boost to full high definition, 1920 x 1080.

The design of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus drastically changed by ditching the sharp edges that had been with the iPhone for four generations, favouring a more ergonomically pleasing chassis. The screen curves into the body with rounded edges and corners, but the new metal backed design caused complaints suggesting the phone is too smooth and slippery to hold.

The ninth generation welcomed the iPhone 6s, which followed the same design as its predecessor.
