Amesbury School Visual Arts Centre in Surrey was designed to offer an unrivalled range of facilities for children across the spectrum of visual arts expression.

The contemporary building, which features a mature Scots pine, has been constructed of the highest standards of building efficiency and sustainability creating a flexible, light and airy working space for children of all ages, offering a space that enhances the attainment and experience of learning.

The new building, on site centred around Sir Edwin Lutyens’ only purpose built school building, provides some 195 sq m of internal space and an equivalent area of external decking for use as display or outdoor classroom space.

The double-height internal space is overseen by a galleried upper level for use as a display area or for special project work, with store rooms and offices beneath.

It is accessed via a timber stairway, dramatically cantilevered around the canted walls of a kiln room and whose outer balustrade is its structural stringer.

The judges said:

‘A very thoughtful and crafted project.’
