Ophelia is a unique venue in Hong Kong with its interiors focusing on one single object as a central theme – the peacock.

The venue incorporates the peacock’s beauty and magnificent colours into its design in a modern way through the inclusion of the culture of the Far East and representation of modern life in the concrete jungle of the city. The interiors combine intricate metalwork with velvets, suedes and leathers creating a modern yet whimsical and sensual venue, with detail layered on detail to create visual depth and ensure a wow factor.

A hidden entrance in ‘Mr Wong’s Aviary’ leads into Ophelia, where peacock pictures screen-painted on bamboo, 32 steel, copper and stainless-steel industrial peacock art pieces with the plumage made from peacock feathers, and 600,000 ceramic tiles – individually hand-painted to fully achieve the colours of the peacock feathers’ ‘eye’ – feature. The space’s structural columns and lift shafts were exploited to create intimate alcoves and semi-private rooms reminiscent of the city’s 19th century unscale opium dens.

The judges said:

‘The attention to detail for every visitor creates a memorable and exciting space unike anything else.‘ ‘The rich and exuberant decor covering every surface creates its own dreamy world and there is a strong coherence achieved through the use of deep peacock green and the intricate dramatically lit metalwork.’
