The Temple House in Chengdu offers 100 guest rooms, 42 serviced apartments and extensive public spaces. The visually innovative hotel forms a key element of the Chengdu Daci Temple Cultural and Commercial Complex.

The form is specific to this location – a typical Sichuan courthouse configuration – and incorporates features, materials and landscaping that reference the region’s unique scenery and architectural style. This sensitive reconciliation of old and new has resulted in a hotel with a distinct, contextually appropriate sense of place.

Bespoke wooden furniture, sculptural decor and natural fabrics in the guest rooms provide comforts that are both luxurious and atmospheric. The guest rooms juxtapose dark-timber panelling with neutral, light interiors to create a stylish, comfortable urban retreat. Timber finishes and subtle textures add warmth, while custom-made furniture and traditional Chinese screens enhance the sense of serenity and bespoke, inviting luxury.

The judges said:

‘A wonderful blend of historic features and contemporary design. Extremely contextual and respectful of its heritage and setting. Balanced with a clean simplicity in the design’
