UCLA breaks ground for Pauley Pavilion renovation in Los Angeles

The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has broken ground for the renovation and expansion project of Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams, designed by global architecture and design firm NBBJ.

The 1965-built building will be transformed into a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility offering major seismic and life-safety upgrades. The facility will get improved seating, new pedestrian concourses, and modern team facilities. The venue will be redesigned to host basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and all the other non-sports-related activities.

In order to lessen the need for cross circulation within the event space, the amenities and circulation space will be optimized by expanding the exterior spaces. The North concourse will feature a 35 feet glass-enclosed entrance; the East concourse will include a Tradition Gallery that will showcase the legacy of UCLA Athletics; the South concourse will be opened to an enhanced marketplace, creating a dynamic indoor-outdoor environment; and the West concourse will link the building together, allowing for easy access to the expanded concessions and restrooms. The new concourse structure has been designed to create an open, light, and welcoming face to the campus community.

The character and appearance of the Pauley Pavilion, originally designed by architect Welton Becket, will be enhanced by the use of new materials. Terracotta rain-screen panels, glass curtain wall, frosted channel glass, glass overhead folding hangar doors and precast concrete panels have been incorporated in the exterior.

NBBJ will remodel the pavilion in such a way that the iconic existing roof trusses are visible from all sides, with new lighting system integrated to highlight this signature feature of the building.

Commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, the indoor arena is one of the most famous athletic and student-use facilities in the US. UCLA began the renovation project with construction company PCL and design firm NBBJ.
