#4 Seagram Building Plaza bench, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Park Avenue, New York, USA

Tom Fletcher

In 1958 when Mies constructed the Seagram Building on Park Avenue, he chose to set the building back from the street, opening up the area to the public.

A long bench runs along the edge of the plaza, overlooking the fountain and providing the public with an urban space to enjoy themselves and socialise outside.

This minimalist modern feature captures the style of Mies, creating an inner-city structure that continues to bring people together and provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
