Piazza Venezia. Rome, Italy

If “all roads lead to Rome”, then one could also argue that all Roman roads lead to Piazza Venezia. The breadth of vehicles that whirl, zoom, and brake around the cobblestoned roundabout certainly highlight the piazza as a major hub of the Eternal City. Cloistering it are architectural gems whose longevity poses as testament to Rome’s ability to wear the past and present with panache.

Crowning the fluid chaos of daily traffic is the imposing Il Vittoriano, created in the 20th century in honour of King Victor Emanuel II, first king of unified Italy. The piazza takes its name from the Palazzo Venezia, which toes the central thoroughfare and was once a papal residence. The Via dei Fori Imperiali, inaugurated by Benito Mussolini, is a major road that connects the roundabout with the Colosseum.
