Superyachts by Zaha Hadid – we can but dream
Hadid has turned her inimitable style to the superyacht, designing a family of five luxury boats with naval architect Blohm+Voss

From jewellery to art galleries, there are few things Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid has yet to design - but whatever she and her firm ZHA takes on, be it a cultural centre in Baku or a pair of shoes for Brazilian brand, Melissa, it almost always feels like a total reinvention. Familiar objects or types of buildings are, in the hands of Hadid and her architects, rendered unique, otherworldly and somehow inimitably 'Zaha'.
Take these designs for Superyachts which have gone on show as part of the latest exhibition of Zaha Hadid's work at the David Gill Gallery in London, for example.
Designed for Blohm+Voss the Unique Circle Yachts is a family of five individual 90m yachts that, according to Hadid 'creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully-engineered yacht design'.
According to ZHA, the overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull.
The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht's external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals.
The 90m JAZZ yacht (pictured) is the first of the five Unique Circle Yachts that has been technically specified and detailed by the naval architects at Blohm+Voss.
