Orlando Fire Department gets new headquarters

The city of Orlando opened the doors of the new $17 million Orlando Fire Department headquarters and Fire Station No. 1 on West Central Boulevard in downtown Orlando on December 2, 2009.

Designed by New Smyrna Beach-based Schweizer, Waldroff Architects Inc., the 59,000 square feet fire station will house more than 70 firefighters and will serve as the fire department’s headquarters. It also will house hazardous materials units, rescue teams, fire safety management and the arson/bomb squad.

The new station, which is the city’s sixth LEED certified building, replaces the former 18,000 square feet Fire Station No. 1. The former fire station will be a site for the planned Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center.

The project was engineered by Winter Park-based John J. Christie & Associates of Florida Inc. and Pittsburgh-based GAI Consultants Inc. Sanford-based Wharton-Smith Inc. was the general contractor.
