Maroochydore Government Office Building in Australia gets 6 Star Green Star rating


The new AUD79.5 million ($82 million) Maroochydore Government Office Building in Queensland, Australia has received a 6 Star Green Star rating for its ecologically sustainable office building design from the Green Building Council of Australia.


The new building has been designed to maximise energy and water efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a healthy indoor environment.

The innovative air conditioning solutions incorporated in the building include energy recovery, thermal storage and off–peak cooling. Other exclusive features include personalised comfort controlled workstations, chilled beam technology and ceiling fans. The fresh air supply in the building is 150% above required under Australian Standards.

Photovoltaic cell technology is being used to reduce dependence on the electricity grid. The design of the building takes advantage of natural light further reducing the need for artificial light.

Other sustainable features in the building design include wide sunlight and glare control, thermally efficient façade and roof materials, and high ceilings. Water efficient appliances have been installed in the building. The building also has an integrated water management system in place.

Work on the new building will be over by mid-2011. Once ready, the building will provide 8,600 square metres of new government office accommodation on the Sunshine Coast.
