Museum or exhibition space

Winner: Museum of Natural and Environmental History, Shizuoka
by TANSEISHA Co

Museum of Natural and Environmental History, Shizuoka

The Museum of Natural and Environmental History in Shizuoka is the first in Japan with a natural and environmental history theme.

It was established on the premises of a vacant prefectural high school un Shizouka Prefecture, the home of Mount Fiji.

The museum is designed to be a place for studying natural and environmental history by utilising the learning environment of the former school that sat on the site. Each exhibition room recreates the school environment with chars, desks and blackboards but with the furniture arranged in atypical ways to cause visitors to rethink their environment when visiting the space.

The judges said:
‘The Museum actually creates an experience that is not merely ‘artefacts in a glass case’. Strong graphic identity as part of the narrative. Visually stunning, highly interactive and interesting spaces that are challenging and have a combination of whimsical innocence. Yet, have seriously sophisticated thinking at their core and subtext. Wow.’
