Client: Studious Investment Management
Operating partner: Collegiate AC
This year’s winning project in the Fly Forbo design competition is Ernest Place, Durham by Greenwell Design. Together with client Studious Investment Management, it created student accommodation with a specification more reminiscent of a boutique hotel.
Greenwell Design did not just specify Forbo’s products, but used them with imagination and creativity to utilise them to the best of their ability. It has used a range of Forbo products to demarcate clear circulation zones and provide the best product for a given space.

The design practice specified Sarlon Xl, a natural wood-effect vinyl floor, with an enhanced acoustic rating, in all circulation corridors, reducing sound impact in the high traffic areas of the student complex.
In Flotex, it found a robust and practical product. With the warm characteristics of a carpet, this hybrid floor covering is Allergy UK approved, providing a healthy environment essential to students’ wellbeing that a carpet couldn’t offer. In living spaces, Greenwell Design specified Allura Flex. A product that reflects the natural warmth of wood, the looselay tiles can be used in a variety of patterns to create interest. The Allura Flex in rough oak herringbone chevron pattern was used in the dining spaces to give a more luxurious feel than other communal areas.

Mark Brown, director at Greenwell Design said: ‘The scheme has sought to create a comfortable but cutting-edge facility with high-quality materials throughout. Forbo’s flooring helped to accentuate and bring out the quality, working with its range of products to give an enviable finish in a cost-effective manner.’
Forbo Flooring Systems established the annual Fly Forbo competition to recognise and celebrate designers who use its products to produce exceptional spaces and places.
