Cardiff Ice Arena design unveiled in UK

Design for Cardiff’s proposed 2,500-seat ice arena has been unveiled in Cardiff, UK which will be the new home of the Cardiff Devils.

According to the plans, the 4,000 square metre box-shaped building will be brilliant white. It will also feature shards of mirrored glass. At night, perforated lights will shine blue or red when the Devils are playing at home.

The external cladding will be designed to express the dynamic, translucent and reflective qualities of ice. The design lay out is in keeping with the site theme of water, ice and snow. During the day, the building will give the impression of a fissured Antarctic ice cliff floating on a dark ocean. An innovative lighting system will be incorporated into the external design that will change colour at night, and will reflect different activities and events such as big match nights.

Construction of the iceberg-inspired building will commence in late August or early September 2011. Builder Operator Planet Ice said it would take about 35 weeks to finish the work. The design also incorporates an expanded VIP area for corporate sponsors. The 2,500-seat arena is likely to open in June 2012 in time for the 2012/13 Elite Ice Hockey League season.

The arena is a key ambition of the International Sports Village at Cardiff Bay that already has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and International White Water Centre.
