Ab Rogers to design exhibition space for May Design Series

The designer will create a completely recyclable set for this year's exhibition, using materials including cardboard tubes

Ab Rogers Design is to design the main exhibition space for this year's May Design Series, which takes place, from 18 to 20 May at ExCeL London.

According to the show's organisers, the set will be constructed entirely from 100 per cent recyclable materials, primarily cardboard tubes which Rogers will create a 'powerful dynamic vista' that will welcome visitors to the show. Rogers says: 'We're using bright multi-coloured cardboard tubes, placed closely together, to create an acoustic separation. The cardboard tubes are of various scales of thickness and dimensions, inviting visitors to engage and move in and out of the spaces around them.'

Both the DX Bar feature and the VIP Lounge will be illuminated by a specially designed lighting 'cloud' which Rogers is working with LG Chemical to create. Rogers describes this lighting cloud as an illuminated canopy which will shed a 'diffused glow of light' over the exhibition, and believes this to be the first time that such a canopy will be created on this scale. He says: 'I think it's fantastic: the grander we can make it the bigger it becomes; the more of an experience visitors will get.'

Rogers' previous projects include schemes for Tate Modern, Pompidou Centre Paris and Selfridges.

Of his collaboration with the show, Rogers says: 'It will start to feel like a European trade show - I believe that in collaboration with May Design Series we can create an international impact.'
