London architecture and interiors practice Universal Design Studio has delivered the new flagship store for J&M Davison, reflecting the smooth and classic lines of the brand.

Sited on Mount Street the store forms part of a Grade II listed building, with the boutique store sitting across from the Connaught Hotel on one of the most iconic shopping streets in London. The store's clean lines and calming neutral tones of dusty taupes and soft pinks serve as a haven for Mayfair shoppers to browse the newest collections of luxury bags, accessories and ready-to-wear pieces.

'We were keen that the space had a strong dialogue with its place while reflecting the brand's commitment to craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail, expressing the timeless and understated nature of the brand,' says Jason Holley, director of Universal Design Studio.

The focal point of the store is the impressive, cantilevered staircase in solid terrazzo marble with leather-wrapped handrail that invites guests to discover the lower floor. The terrazzo continues as flooring throughout, paired with bespoke cast-glass plinths and heavy concrete counter tops. Luxurious fabrics and soft edges of carefully selected vintage furniture pieces, sourced in collaboration with luxury retail interior and concept designer Nicholas Chandor.

'The biggest challenge on the project was construction of the feature staircase,' says Holley with Universal Design Studio working with structural engineer Price & Myers to create a modern interpretation of a traditional cantilever stone staircase. 'Each tread was individually cast in solid terrazzo and features a bespoke brass inlay detail. The leather-wrapped handrail was completed on site by the craftsmen from Bill Amberg Studio.'

Last year was the 30th anniversary of what is now a global brand and the opening of J&M Davidson's third store, with the vision and essential brand qualities of luxury leather goods, knits and fabrics, hand-stitching and perfect tailoring enduring. Universal Design Studio's design reflects these core brand values.
