William J. Pete Knight Veterans Home unveiled in California

California Department of Veterans Affairs has unveiled the $22.2 million William J. Pete Knight Veterans Home of California in city of Lancaster, featuring a single-story building with facilities arranged around a central courtyard.

California-based Barnhart-Heery served as the general contractor for the project. The home is designed to provide California’s disabled and aging veterans with rehabilitative, residential and medical care services and is named after California state senator William J. Pete Knight, a record-setting test pilot and combat veteran.

The single-story, 46,620 square feet, four-wing complex comprises two residential wings with a total of 60 beds for full-time residents, a 50-person Adult Day Health Care wing, and a services and administration wing, all surrounding a central courtyard. The home is built to Green Guide to Health Care standards, which is equivalent to a LEED –certified building.

The 30-acre site on which the home is constructed was donated by the City of Lancaster, and is large enough for future expansions. The facility has single and semi-private double-occupancy suites ranging in size from 250 square feet to 500 square feet, each with ADA-compliant bathrooms and custom built-in window seating in the large bay windows.

All living units offer Internet capabilities, cable television, and a nurse calling system. Other amenities comprise laundry facilities, an exercise room, a physical therapy room, a dining and community recreation hall, and a full-service kitchen. Services include nursing care, a dietitian and a mental health office.
