University of Manitoba breaks ground on new leisure facility in Canada

University of Manitoba has broken ground on a new CAD46 million ($46.93 million) leisure facility called Active Living Centre at its campus in Manitoba, Canada.

The new Active Living Centre will be about 100,000 square feet facility, which will be built over four-levels. The building will be an eco-friendly facility and will feature a luminous glass exterior.

The open-concept facility will accommodate a training facility for athletes, a 200m indoor running track, a 12m climbing wall, an Applied Research Centre, a gathering area for students, strength and conditioning facilities, and three group workout studios.

Active Living Centre will have a capacity to serve around 2,000 persons per day, making it the largest facility in Manitoba. It will replace the current facility, dubbed as the "Gritty Grotto.” Construction on the project is expected to be completed in 2015. The project has received CAD2.5 million ($2.55 million) from the city of Winnipeg.
