The recipients of the Design Guild Mark have been announced for this year, encompassing 27 products across three categories – Furniture, 2D Design and, new for this year, Lighting Design.

The Design Guild Mark is awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry. Aiming to drive excellence and raise the profile of British design and innovation, the awards are open to designers working in Britain as well as British designers working abroad.

Each category has its own jury, assessing the categories against criteria that consider the sustainability and suitability of materials, new thinking shown by the design, or problems solved by it.

A ceremony on Wednesday 2 June 2021 at 1pm, broadcast on Instagram live, will announce the winning designers, as well as announcing the winners of the Jonathan Hindle Prize, an additional award presented to the most outstanding of the winners each year.

Rodney McMahon, chairman of the Design Guild Mark, commented:

‘This year we welcomed the Lighting Design category, with its new panel of judges and we are delighted to have expanded the scope and reach of the Guild Marks by doing so.  The three days of virtual judging were absolutely riveting, and, despite the obvious challenges, we embraced the process and achieved a very balanced and effective result.  Emboldened by this, we shall hold the Awards ceremony on Instagram in June and look forward to connecting to as wide a spectrum of designers, and their admirers, as possible.’

Winners included newcomers as well as those who have previously received The Design Guild Mark. First time applicant and winner Pierre Greenway said: 'I’ve been living and breathing design for most of my adult life. However, I’ve not been making furniture all that long, and having the chance to apply for a Design Guild and have it awarded, I’m absolutely over the moon. To have such a prestigious award for my first collection is something I’ll always be really proud of.'
