The 10 best tower blocks in Britain
Balfron tower
Location: London
Architect: Erno Goldfinger
Completed: 1967
Located in London's East End, the Balfron Tower is the elder (though slightly squatter) sister of Trellick tower, and was also designed by Goldfinger, who, along with his wife, actually lived in one of the Balfron's flats for a short time after its construction to experience first-hand how it would feel for residents to live there. Like many social-housing tower blocks, the Balfron came to be regarded as a failed social experiment, but like the Trellick, its popularity has surged in recent years with fans of modernist design eager to snap up an apartment in this piece of history - not to mention an apartment locate so close to the city and the now-trendy areas of east London.
Like its sister, the Balfron also has a cultural presence, and has hosted a performance of Macbeth.
