Stade Vélodrome

Location: Marseille, France

Stade Vélodrome officially opened 13th June 1937 and had a cycling track which circled the pitch. One of the oldest stadiums on our list, when the stands were expanded, the cycling track was removed. Refurbishment began in preparation for Euro 1984 Championships; however, the stadium's renovation was not complete until the 1998 World Cup - this is when the Stade Vélodrome got its characteristic round-shaped stands. It was during this time that the seating capacity was also increased to around 60,000.

The roof of the Stade Vélodrome is made from Teflon-impregnated fibreglass and requires almost no maintenance. The canvas is stretched over a metal framework which gives the roof its consistent wavy shape; during the evening, lights are shone through the material, transforming the stadium into a colourful beacon for the area around it.
