Spectacular Grand Designs house selling for £2.3m

Featuring on Grand designs in 2010, the renowned Dome House overlooking Lake Windermere is now on sale.

Living in the Bowness-on-Windermere house for five years has been magical, says Robert Gaukroger, owner and architectural practitioner, with the light, breathtaking views both north and south, and it having, 'a certain something about it which you cannot

The impressive 1980s house features seven bedrooms, a swimming pool, and sits on a property 1,981m on a north/south axis, providing stunning views of both sunrises and sunsets in the Lake District.

'A view you cannot put a price on,' says Gaukroger.

Given it was well-built in the 1980s, Gaukroger used the original structure and added an extension on the side and rear using renewable materials. This involved creating a massive stone wall that divides the two main wings of the house, and a remarkable geodesic roof design to round off this contemporary eco-home. The roof was both expensive and hard work, taking six weeks to build after Gaukroger was forced to alter the original design. The roof exterior is three parts grass and one part recycling slate to harvest rainwater. The largest of the four sections however, Gaukroger was ardent on using geodesic techniques to keep with his original plan, despite the costs, time and effort. Nonetheless the eco-design has paid off, saving power in throughout the year:

'The roof is super strong and the turf covering keeps the house warm in winter and cool in summer,' says Gaukroger.
