SPACE Architecture designs Hopedale Medical Complex expansion

SPACE Architecture + Design Studio has designed the 35,000 square feet expansion of Hopedale Medical Complex (HMC) in Illinois by incorporating a host of sustainable design elements to make it LEED-Silver certified.

SPACE is working with Hopedale Medical Complex on the design of the expansion project that encompasses a new emergency department, imaging space, an intensive care unit and in-patient wing. The new $20 million building will be built to the south of the existing hospital and will replace the 1955 building. About 10,000 square feet of the hospital space will be renovated.

In an effort to make it a sustainable facility and to become LEED-Silver certified, Space is incorporating renewable energy ideas such as wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, a geothermal bore field, native prairie landscaping and a farmers’ market.

Overall, the facility will feature efficient design, high ceilings, large patient rooms and unique steel and glass structure. Space has conceived the building as a patient and nurse-friendly facility flooded with natural sunlight. All patient rooms will be in view of the nurses' station. All patient rooms will feature windows facing the cornfield south of Hopedale and there will be room for family members to stay overnight.

Hopedale Medical Complex (HMC) is owned by the not-for-profit corporation, the Hopedale Medical Foundation.
