Riken Yamamoto wins ‘The Circle at Zurich Airport’ contest

Japanese architectural practice Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop has won an architectural contest named ‘The Circle at Zurich Airport’, to design a high quality building for services within walking distance of the terminal at Zurich Airport, Switzerland.

‘The Circle’ is considered to be one of the world’s most ambitious airport real estate projects. The project involves an investment of around CHF1 billion ($860 million approx).

The competition was launched by Unique (Flughafen Zurich AG) – the operator of Zurich Airport - in February 2009. Riken Yamamoto has won the competition beating more than 90 high-caliber submissions from twelve countries.

The design of Riken Yamamoto stands out thanks to small-scale, intra-urban atmosphere. This foundation makes it possible to present in a large building complex, each with its own tenants address. In addition, the draft also allows great flexibility based on the life of the building.

The Circle with utilizable area of around 200,000 square meter is planned to redefine the way a global audience is welcomed by a community of extraordinary service providers. It will be a complex that offers many different user groups a diverse and appealing mix of upscale amenities with a high level of quality urban lifestyle.
