Renzo Piano's first US project is stunning

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano is making his US debut and as expected, it’s beautiful. The Italian architect is joining forces with Terra, an integrated development firm in South Florida, to create Eighty-Seven park Residences, a private luxury beachfront condominium located in Miami.

The residential project fuses together art, design, and architecture to create a breathtaking vision. Piano is teaming up with West 8 Architects and French designers Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure (RDAI), best known for their work with fashion brand Hermes, to create the build. Cuban artists Isabel and Ruben Toledo have been enlisted to design staff uniforms and create the artwork for the brand campaign. With that lineup you know it’s going to be good.

“It is an honour to be working alongside some of the greatest talents our industry has ever seen,” said David Martin, President of Terra.

“We’ve always strived to construct projects that will have a positive impact on their surroundings and, by extension, the people who live there. Eighty-Seven Park is no exception, and will offer a residential retreat that will bring a dynamic energy to the environment.” He said.

RDAI  puts its best fashion foot forward to style the interior of the property. Taking cues from nature, it has used materials such as pebbles, shells, leaves and sea grass to inspire the décor.

“The palette created for this project was inspired by the surrounding natural elements of North Beach," says Denis Montel, Artistic Director of RDAI.

“Capitalizing on the architectural vision of Renzo Piano Building Workshop, we wanted owners of this building to feel that they were one with nature from their first step inside.” He said.

Light oak flooring mimics the colour palette of aged sea grape leaves found locally, and the Venetian terrazzo floors are a reminder of Miami’s sandy beaches.

The theme of bringing the outdoors in is further enhanced by wrap balconies with glass doors that disappear when opened, minimalizing the distinction between outside and inside.

The project gives new meaning to the Garden of Eden, 70 apartments will be nestled on the edge of parkland on the cusp of Miami Beach and will boast views of both the ocean and the beautiful botanical park.

Piano’s vision was to create a ‘coastal sanctuary’ that enhances the green space in the area. He plans to do this by extending the green park area at the northern limit of the project site.

Martin said: “We want to engage and bring purposeful living not only to the buyers of Eighty Seven Park but to the North Beach community as a whole,” says Martin. “Improving the North Shore Park for all of North Beach and creating an environment that enhances the neighbourhood is Terra’s first priority.”

For residents of the building, a private garden landscaped by West 8 architecture will be accessed using a coveted key. The garden will be an oasis for those living in the condo to retreat to after a busy day in the Miami heat.
