Parkside becomes Carbon Balanced

Trusted tile specification company, Parkside, has become a Carbon Balanced business.

Continuing its pledge to lead the environmental agenda in material specification, Parkside has worked with World Land Trust to identify the carbon emissions of its operations and offset against a range of biodiverse conservation projects to become a Carbon Balanced business.

During an intensive phase of analysis, World Land Trust (WLT) investigated the emissions caused by Parkside’s daily operations, including energy use at its offices and design studios, the emissions of company fleet vehicles, the delivery of products, sampling and more. Thanks to work already taken to adopt better environmental practices, Parkside’s total carbon greenhouse gas emissions were measured at 405tonnes for its 2020/21 FY[1].These emissions are now being offset through the protection of carbon-rich habitat via World Land Trust’s Carbon Balanced programme.

Carbon Balanced leverages WLT REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects to protect highly biodiverse areas under threat from human activity. Since its outset, supporters of Carbon Balanced have offset more than 610,000 tonnes of carbon and provided over £2.5m of funding. Through Carbon Balanced, Parkside is supporting biodiverse WLT projects in Ecuador, Mexico and Vietnam.

Dan Little, managing director, Parkside, says: “We’re committed to being a sustainable business and our Carbon Balanced status represents an important milestone. It joins a range of activities we undertake to drive the environmental agenda and become more sustainable. These include other initiatives with World Land Trust and a range of high recycled content tiles and installation products.

“While technology and processes improve, it is currently difficult to completely eliminate emissions from our operations. Carbon balancing is a good way to redress this. Analysing our emissions, making progressive reductions and offsetting what’s not possible to reduce at this current time; the three-step journey has been insightful and has given complete clarity to the emissions of our operations.”
