Nulty light up new Italian restaurant Scarpetta

Lighting company, Nulty, recently completed the lighting scheme for the opening of artisan pasta restaurant, Scarpetta, and the result is dazzling.

Located in Canary Wharf, the Italian restaurant brings a taste of the Mediterranean to the busy London scene. Nulty teamed up with interior design firm Mystery to create the rustic feel of the restaurant.

Senior Lighting Designer Anna Sandgren says, "The lighting scheme developed for Scarpetta was about creating an intimate environment in the midst of busy Canary Wharf and providing its customers with the perfect escape. We achieved this by using layers of ambient, accent and feature lighting, together with a lighting control system allowing a variety of different lighting scenes that could be used throughout the day."

When creating the lighting concept for the restaurant, Nulty faced a unique challenge in the fact former office building had tinted windows. This non-negotiable aspect posed a problem which Nulty overcame by installing bright neon signage.  Sparkling pendants beam out from behind the tinted windows, creating an air of mystery around the restaurant.

Inside, exposed pipes, timber flooring and copper mesh create an industrial feel to the restaurant. As this is an Italian restaurant, pasta is on the menu. The large, tiled, pasta station takes centre stage with a higher level of illumination to show off the specialist pasta machinery. Carefully positioned copper lamps light up the menu board and highlight the rich texture of the timber background.

The restaurant boasts an airy high ceiling. To create a sense of intimacy for guests, a dropped copper raft has been fitted with transparent pendants reflecting light onto the copper and ceiling to create a warm glow.

In the mixed level seating area, a variety of lamps and pendants create a relaxed dining experience. One of the restaurant’s show-stopping aspects is the feature wall which is decked out with floor to ceiling branded ingredients, cleverly illuminated from up-lit LED strips.

Nulty anticipated the need for diverse lighting options depending on the time of day and weather conditions, so it installed the restaurant with a flexible lighting control system so that guests will have ambient lighting night and day.
