‘Mazzo’ restaurant in Amsterdam by Concrete Architectural Associates unveiled

The Dutch design firm Concrete Architectural Associates has designed the interiors of the ‘Mazzo’ restaurant in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, by uniquely linking the multiplicity of the fused spaces and the natural restaurant layout.

The new restaurant opened on 24 October 2010 is housed in a monumental building on the Rozengracht. The typical Amsterdam building features narrow and deep spaces, fused together with different floor and ceiling levels. This unique setting provides a natural positioning for the restaurant.

The first part of the restaurant features 5m-high ceiling and faces directed outwards. The space has been designed as a suitable area for a bar. The space has been illuminated with the Bestlite series by GUBI offering a feeling of intimacy. A living room ambience has been created by Concrete Architectural Associates by deploying wall lights above the nine-meter chesterfield couch and the suspension lights above the bar and bar tables in XS and XL sizes.

The second part of the Mazzo has been partitioned into two by a few original stone columns. The kitchen of the restaurant has been housed in the darkest part of the space. The seating area of the restaurant is located opposite to the kitchen with flexible, trattoria-like table arrangement.

The third part of the restaurant is orientated towards Bloemstraat. The narrowing section of the building has been designed to accommodate a small backroom where kids can play during the day. At night the toys can be stacked inside the cabinet behind a black-and-white blocked curtain and the space can be used by guests.

The architects have used a huge wooden cupboard as the unifying element of the whole restaurant that has diversity of fused spaces. These assorted spaces and the natural restaurant layout has been linked by the huge wooden cupboard, which spans across the whole restaurant. The cupboard is created out of solid pine wood for storage and display of the products. It functions as stairs to the mezzanine floor, the back bar, point of distribution for the food, the transparent division between the boardroom and restaurant, the wardrobe, the access to the restrooms and the storage for the kids toys.

The ambiance of the raw and honest interior design of Mazzo has been determined by five materials: power floated concrete, chipped brickwork, stone, pinewood and raw steel.

The five letters of ‘Mazzo’ are made of raw steel and are illuminated with classic amusement lights, referring to Mazzo’s fame as a nightclub six years ago.
