London Olympic Stadium transformed for Rugby World Cup

Populous reconfigures the Olympic Stadium to host multiple sporting and cultural events in the future

Tonight's Rugby World Cup match will be held at the London Olympic Stadium, where a remarkable design transformation has made this event possible.

Designed by Populous, the original stadium was created for London's 2012 Olympic Games, the world's largest sporting event, and has now been converted into a world-class venue that can tailor itself to host an array of international sports and culture such as athletics, cricket, football and concerts.

Located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, the stadium will host five games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup including the third place pay-off and starts tonight with France versus Romania.

Some key changes that have been made include:

The original fabric roof has been replaced with the world's largest cantilevered roof at 45,000 sq m in size, and 84m at its deepest point.

To maintain the Olympic Stadium's identity, the iconic triangular lighting towers that previously hung over the roof have now been placed to hang underneath the new larger roof.

To cater for world-class musicians, the new roof has improved acoustics by reflecting the noise of the terraces and projecting it towards the pitch.

The stadium meets the UEFA Category 4 classification, the highest standard possible, as well as meeting to IAAF Category 1 standards.

Populous are a world-renowned design practice of innovative talent and have been involved in 10 Olympic Games amongst the 90 other events. Key stadiums include New York's Yankee Stadium and London's Wembley.

In 2017 the stadium will host the World Athletics and IPC Athletics Championships.
