Las Vegas City Hall opens in Nevada

The new $185 million Las Vegas City Hall has opened in Nevada, US.

The building has been designed by architect Howard Elkus of Elkus Manfredi Architects. It spans 310,000 square feet and covers seven floors. The facility houses the council chambers whose design has been inspired by the underground springs which first brought people to the region. The look of the building's lobby is indicative of Hoover Dam and Black Canyon. The lobby also dons illuminated glass panels reminiscent of Colorado River.

The facility imbibes several green features. These include LED lighting fixtures which adorn the front portion of the structure and showcase artistic patterns. Installation of these luminaires will lead to annual energy cost cuts of over $400,000. The LED-powered lighting will also cut down greenhouse emissions by over 2400 metric tonnes. The facility's plaza will be fitted with 33 solar trees. This, coupled with incorporation of separate solar panels, will generate nearly 290,000 kilowatt hours of power per year for the building.

The project has been financed through bonds including some from the Federal Build America Bonds.
