Kenya commissions study for new airport runway in Nairobi

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) will commence a technical study to build a second runway at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

The second runway will be part of the northern corridor infrastructure program, which is estimated to cost KSH32 billion ($392,384) and is expected to be completed by 2015. The study, which will be commissioned by October 2010, will include planning, preliminary design, costing and documentation for construction of the new runway.

The second runway is planned to be used as an alternative option when the existing runway, which registers nearly 80% utilization during peak periods, is closed for maintenance. The runway project will begin after the phase two, three and four of the JKIA upgrading project worth KSH26 billion ($318.81 million) is complete.

The second runway will be planned within the next three to five years. KAA will contribute KSH9.6 billion ($117.71 million) from its own resources for the project.
