HOK-designed Burnett Biomedical Sciences Building in Florida complete


The five-story Burnett Biomedical Sciences Building in Florida, designed by global design practice HOK, will provide researchers and graduate students more than 198,000 square feet of research and office space.


The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, located on the campus of the University of Central Florida (UCF) Health Sciences Campus in Florida, will also serve as the primary research facility for UCF’s College of Medicine.

The five-story facility provides more than 198,000 square feet of research and office space to advance the understanding of human disease and develop innovative methods of treatment for some of the most prevalent health problems, including cancer and cardiovascular, infection, and neurodegenerative diseases.

The UCF College of Medicine with its Medical Education building and Burnett Biomedical Science building are part of a developing “medical city,” which is under construction south of Orlando International Airport and is home to the Burnham Institute, VA Medical Center, and the Nemours Children’s Hospital.

The building with a major transgenic animal facility and Biosafety level 3 laboratories is ready for occupancy. The facility also includes offices, conferencing and administrative suites. The new laboratories allow varying research teams to organize their modular labs offer changes in equipment, technology, and casework thanks to the flexible design.

It is the first of several buildings that will create a biomedical cluster that will include not only the Burnett School building, but also UCF’s College of Medicine, the Burnham Institute and a satellite University of Florida research building, a new Veterans Administration Medical Center and Nemours Children’s Hospital all of which will have vigorous biomedical research programs.
