Haworth’s Perkins + Will-designed HQ and showroom in US win LEED-Gold

Office furniture manufacturer Haworth’s global headquarters in Michigan, and showrooms in San Francisco and New York City, designed by Perkins + Will, have recently achieved LEED-Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Haworth’s global headquarters in Holland, Michigan, has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Gold certification for the project spanning 300,000 square feet. Designed by global architectural practice Perkins + Will, the building has a three-story, 35,000 square feet glass atrium and a 45,000 square feet green roof. Although the building size increased by 20%, overall energy usage decreased by 10%.

The Haworth HQ project also represents the first time carbon credits from a renewable energy project were used to achieve green power credits for LEED-Gold certification instead of renewable energy credits. Haworth purchased the high quality carbon credits from the CarbonNeutral Company, a major carbon offset and carbon management business.

During the Haworth global headquarters renovation, Haworth recycled over 98% of the old building. This was achieved through the combined efforts of Haworth and Turner Construction Company. The process included reusing concrete floors and steel beams, using concrete waste dust from Haworth manufacturing and window glass to make new concrete construction block, donating materials to local schools and down-cycling debris for aggregate used in road-bed construction.

Haworth’s showroom at 555 Mission Street in San Francisco, California, spans over 8,300 square feet on the 19th floor of San Francisco’s first LEED-Gold certified speculative high-rise development. Also designed by Perkins + Will and built with Turner Construction Company, the dramatic space with floor-to-ceiling windows allows light to infiltrate the space. The showroom entrance is defined by ceiling lattice made of reclaimed wood.

Haworth’s New York showroom features sustainability lab, global seating gallery, wood salon and global collaborative resources. Also built in partnership with Perkins +Will | Eva Maddox Branded Environments and Turner Construction, the New York showroom is one of the few LEED-CI Gold spaces in the city.

Haworth’s global headquarters also earned EPA’s Energy Star - the national symbol for protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency. The Haworth global headquarters ranked amongst the top 5% of energy-efficient office buildings in the US.

With the addition of these certifications, Haworth has six LEED Gold spaces in North America. Globally, Haworth has two international LEED certified spaces- the company’s showrooms in Shanghai, China and Pune, India.
