Graffit restaurant in New York displays graffiti theme

Graffit, a new restaurant in New York designed by Garret Singer Architecture and Design, showcases a unique interior that pays tribute to the chef and owner Jesús Núñez Rábano’s former life as a graffiti artist.

Besides displaying artist-turned-chef’s culinary creations, Graffit has been designed in such a way as to pay homage to his former life as a graffiti artist in his native Madrid, Spain. The project is a collaborative effort between the owner, Garret Singer Architecture and Design and construction firm Aerial Design and Build.

The interior space constitutes mainly three sections: tapas and bar, dining room, and garden room. Each space has been designed to reflect its own distinct personality and colour palettes, all of which are inspired by the chef’s vivid comestible constructions.

Graffit is housed in a space that had been home to another restaurant. The entire interior space has been gutted, reconstructed, and deconstructed to give it a patina of age and ‘make it seem abandoned,’ according to Singer.

Graffiti-style murals line the walls at Graffit. Brick walls of the garden room, and the wall in the dining room featuring a matador and bull engaged in battle, offer an indirect reference to the restaurant’s roots in Spanish cuisine.

Graffit is Spanish chef Jesús Núñez’s first American restaurant.
