Recalling the parasol - or flying saucer - shaped canopies of Britain's 1960s Mobil Petrol stations (see page 7), this service area in Matúškovo, Slovakia, is made of a reinforced concrete structure featuring three funnel-shaped columns that support three curvy horizontal discs. Overhead lighting is built into the surface where columns meet the discs and lining their undulating edges.

The larch-wood facade of the cubic kiosk boosts the station's streamlined appearance, while timber beams inside the shop generate a sense of coherence between interior and exterior.
