First DuPont Corian Design Studio of Asia unveils in Shanghai

The first DuPont Corian Design Studio of Asia that was unveiled in Shanghai, China, designed by British designer Michael Young, features inspirational interiors using Corian.

Located in Huashan Square in Shanghai, the DuPont Corian Design Studio breathes an air of modernity while portraying a user-centered architecture. It serves as a creative space to demonstrate how Corian as a material can both inspire and achieve complex customised applications for commercial and residential environments. The studio brings Eastern and Western cultures together, drawing from the rich history of Chinese art and building techniques.

Visitors are greeted in the psychedelic-styled Reception Mosaic Room, which features 11,000 pieces of multi-coloured, hexagonal Corian tiles. Within the showroom, several design features, all comprised of Corian, generate an eye-catching effect - a new Bamboo sculpture, which can be converted into a table, showcases a structure of more than 2,000 Corian Glacier white and Lava Rock pieces; the Interstella Overdrive wall sculpture comprised of 1,860 pieces of Corian Glacier white, creates a focal wall based on Chinese building techniques; the Magnesium Proverb wall sculpture features an array of Corian in Glacier white, Hot, Nocturne, and Turkish Blue hues; a shower display in Cirrus white; and CityTream, a staged, high-speed train cabin interior in Glacier white, Dove, and Glacier Gloss.

Furniture has been interpreted into its unique style at the showroom, evolving into art pieces. A luxurious wall decoration and a delicate daily houseware also adorn the interiors, adding playful burst into each design.

Hong Kong-based British designer Michael Young has designed the space by blending art and technology and exploiting the thermoformability and versatility inherent in Corian. A key feature of the project is the curved wall that pushes the latest 3D CNC technology to its limits with thousands of bricks assembling to make a fluid solid structure. The element is extended to some wall circles and to 3D translucent walls.

The studio was unveiled in Shanghai on 11 August 2010. It serves as a platform for designers from Asia and around the globe to exchange ideas and concepts and to explore possibilities and potential. It is the first DuPont Corian Design Studio in Asia-Pacific, followed by one each in Italy and US.
