Dio Davies creates self-playing pink piano from the future

How do you really get the party started? With a coral pink, futuristic piano that plays all your favourite tunes, of course.

Up and coming furniture designer, Dio Davies, has created a self-playing piano which looks like it wouldn’t be out of place on the set of Blade Runner.

The Edelweiss Piano is enclosed inside a transparent Perspex shell and can be illuminated by neon lights, making it a real statement piece.

Davies said that her travels in India and her love of Science Fiction movies inspired this design.

“I took my love of films such as Tron and Blade Runner and their technological aesthetic – and the colours from my travels: tropical sunsets, flamingos and coral shells – and used crisp, dazzling acrylic to transform this hand-crafted artisan instrument into a vibrant work of art,” said Davies.

The party piano can connect wirelessly to a concealed iPod to play any song through hidden speakers.

“I wanted to create the ultimate interactive experience, a sculpture that at the flick of a switch turns into a radiant and dramatic centrepiece, drawing you in both by sight and sound,” Davies said.

Although the piano has sci-fi elements, Davies has been careful not to erase the beauty of this classical instrument.

“I wanted to respect the heritage of the piano and its traditional mechanisms, the wooden hammers and levers, and the classic black and white keys. However, I wanted to take it into the future and the transparency presented an exciting challenge,” Davis said.

“The piano needed to be beautiful, whilst also hiding the digital wizardry that allows the Edelweiss self-play system to operate behind the scenes.”

Davies achieved this by collaborating with piano company Edelweiss, which has been handcrafting self-playing custom pianos from more than 40 years.

She said:  “Edelweiss was the only company I could find that could build this piano, and help me realise my dream. I wanted something magnificent but musically precise; and their craftsmen were able to configure the exact design, colour and materials I was looking for.”

Currently, the piano is situated at Mayfair cocktail lounge, Sketch, however, it is up for sale.

But if you want this pretty pink piano at your bash it will cost you a pretty penny. It is currently priced at £38,000.
