Curtin University in Australia gets Woodhead-designed Scholars Restaurant

Curtin University in Perth, Australia has commenced work on Scholars Restaurant project, designed by Australian architectural design practice Woodhead, featuring an open plan arrangement.

Scholars Restaurant is a new dining facility on Curtin University campus, which incorporates a bar area, restaurant and cafe with some alfresco seating in an open plan arrangement. The facility will be located in the old Curtin Club location in building 104.

Woodhead has designed the project in such a way as to deliver a multi-programme hospitality facility refurbishment with a primary focus aimed towards faculty members and postgraduate students. The old Curtin Club bar facilities and Noodle House will be completely replaced with a new layout, high quality finishes, ambient lighting, and new built-in joinery, ceilings and commercial kitchen facilities. The meeting rooms will also be upgraded.

The new restaurant facility aims to encourage the exchange of informal learning through a predominately open plan arrangement consisting of a café, bar and restaurant amenities. The open plan aesthetic delivers a useful sense of space and assists in the appreciation of a double height void located across the glazed entry.

Low level bespoke joinery provides structure to the space and promotes varying groups of intimate and social seating. A semi-open kitchen forms the only full height division in the space. This space has been designed to create a physical boundary between the café and bar programmes.

Woodhead’s design of Scholars Restaurant involves maximum use of natural materials, differing ceiling planes and intimate lighting to aid in delivering a sophisticated, yet informal space of exchange and converse.
