Coffey completes renovation of Dandenong Hospital’s Mental Health wing

Coffey Projects has completed the first phase of a $57 million project for expanding and refurbishing Dandenong Hospital’s Mental Health Services division in Melbourne.

The project has been funded by the State Government. The first phase of the project involved redevelopment of an 8500 square meter area that has 120 beds. This phase involved completion of the 50-bed Adult Acute unit.

The purpose of redevelopment was to convert the mental facility's traditional institutionalised accommodation to a residential model, providing more privacy and dignity to the residents of the facility. The highlights of the redevelopment include refurbished individual bedrooms, sizable communal area and internal courtyard providing ample natural light to the area.

The project used timber-clad design for rendering warmth, tactility and a home-like milieu to the patients. The project was executed using durable and robust material, which enables easy maintenance of the building.

The facility is a single storey pavilion featuring single loaded corridors. The renovated gardens and internal courtyard spaces facilitate seamless movement of the patients within the facility. The facility has discrete area for women that renders security and privacy to the female patients of the facility. This area has secure door and gives access to only single patient or staff on the individual bedroom.

The second and third phase of the project would involve development of Aged Acute unit, Administration, Research and Teaching facility and Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU). The entire project is schedule for completion in late 2012.
