French artist Camille Walala has created a playful new public installation for west London’s White City

West London’s White City has recently revealed a new large scale public artwork, created by French artist Camille Walala. Entitled Les Jumeaux (The Twins), the artwork comprises of two uniquely-designed pedestrian crossings, as well as seven striking murals; all the new pieces feature Walala’s signature use of geometric patterns and primary colours.

Walala was commissioned to create the new public artwork by Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and Aimco; Les Jumeaux is also the French artist’s first major public outdoor artwork in West London. Forming part of White City Place’s wider cultural programme, the new eye-catching installation transforms the pedestrian crossings on South Africa Road and Wood Lane, while the seven murals adorn the façade of the WestWorks building.

“This was a really exciting commission because I got to explore the area so much more than I have in the past, and bring colourful, joyful patterns to this part of London,” Walala says. “I like when my projects begin with this element of curiosity. I was inspired by the rich architectural details and began working in my sketchbook, making drawings and collages, which grew into the bigger scale installation. It's a balancing process to find happy accidents along the way while keeping the style simple and bold.”

Drawing inspiration from the strong functional shapes that can be found on the facades of the buildings surrounding the artwork, Les Jumeaux brings new life to White City with its use of vibrant colours and eye-catching patterns. To create the installation, Walala began with drawings and collages in a sketchbook, before experimenting with colour and pattern to develop the final piece through an instinctive, creative process.

The result is an exciting new artwork in the urban landscape of White City, which connects Walala’s characteristic and joyful style with the strong architectural history of the area and will create a bold, lively energy in the community. Les Jumeaux follows the success of two other projects in the area; international design duo Craig & Karl’s transformation of a disused petrol station on Wood Lane, and Richard Wood’s Holiday Home, in Television Centre.
