‘Your project gets stronger by working with people’: exclusive Blueprint interview with Thomas Heatherwick

The founder of Heatherwick Studio talks to Blueprint about the importance of collaboration in an exclusive video interview

Each year, Blueprint magazine speaks to two leading architects on the theme of collaboration: what does it mean to them? What role does — or should — collaboration play in the current landscape of architecture and design?

In an exclusive filmed interview, which you can watch below, we sat down with British designer Thomas Heatherwick just ahead of the opening of his studio’s latest project, Coal Drops Yard. But what did he have to say about collaboration?

’It’s a very simple story to say, I have my brilliant idea, everyone else is an idiot and I just persuade all the idiots gradually to make my project happen,’ Heatherwick told Blueprint, ‘and instead, my experience has not been that — your project gets stronger by working with people.’ Watch the full interview below!

We also discussed all things collaboration with world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, so stay tuned for that upcoming video interview. Full transcripts of both interviews can be found in Issue 361 of Blueprint, on sale in November.

Our sincere thanks goes to Heatherwick Studio, as well as to Arper, who kindly provided the venue for the interviews and supported the filming.
