Binghamton University opens Decker Student Health Services Center

Binghamton University in New York has unveiled the renovated 1966-built Decker Student Health Services Center.

Binghamton University hosted a grand opening celebration of the Decker Student Health Services Center on 18 January 2011. The main objective of the renovation scheme was to enhance health care services to students and strengthen relationships with local healthcare agencies.

The renovation scheme did not expanded the building's footprint, but its interior space has been updated to accommodate more medical service providers. The improved facility now features some additions such as ten more medical examining rooms and a larger waiting room. A ‘smart classroom’ has also been incorporated to provide a springboard for programmes and educational webcasts. A learning kiosk for students, new diagnostic equipment and transitioning to an electronic medical records system are some other improvements.

The entire facility, built in 1966 as a 34-bed infirmary and outpatient clinic, was originally designed to accommodate a student enrollment of 6,000 students. Today, Binghamton’s current and growing student population of close to 15,000 has outgrown the facility. The expansion and renovation of clinical space resulting from the Decker funding has increased capacity for direct clinical care appointments, as well as provided space for additional practitioners.

A $1.5 million gift from the Dr. G. Clifford and Florence B. Decker Foundation was used to fund renovations and upgrades to the Health Services Center.
