ALD lights up Jimmy Carter Museum in Georgia

Rhode Island-based Abernathy Lighting Design (ALD) has completed lighting design work on the newly renovated Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum houses US President Jimmy Carter's papers and other materials related to the Carter administration and the Carter family's life.

Brought onto the project by Georgia-based exhibit fabricator Design and Production Incorporated (D&P), ALD, with 25 years of experience in museum, commercial, theatrical, and entertainment lighting design, has completed the lighting project. D&P has completed 70,000 square feet of Carter museum installation.

For the museum that has an exhibition space spanning over 16,800 square feet, ALD has used the latest energy efficient LED technology. ALD worked closely with manufacturers and designers to develop a LED track head with custom accessory holder. This LED track head allowed the team to mold the tone of each gallery creating a compelling ambiance.

The project has utilized all existing track prior to the purchase of any new materials. The existing halogen track heads are reused in the Temporary Gallery, where a new dimming system provides control of intensity and energy consumption. For a calculated 1.3 watts per square feet, the new lighting system is energy-efficient as well as offers a high-quality museum lighting design.

ALD has worked in close association with the library's curatorial staff, and has utilized the custom LED track heads along with fiber, and dimming. This is done to ensure that the individual artifacts found throughout the library are preserved for future generations. The theatrical patterns, angles and color have been used in a manner to give a unique experience to the guests as they explore a piece of American History.

A $10 million dollar renovation of the museum began in April 2009 with completion on President Carter's 85th birthday in October 2009.
