Albany Medical Center breaks ground on $360 million expansion project

Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, has broken ground for a $360 million expansion project.

The project will see the addition of a six-storey complex to the hospital. The total number of beds will increase from 631 to 714. The expansion will add 56 more neonatal intensive care beds, 60 single room medical-surgical beds, 20 operating rooms, a new recovery unit and ICU for trauma and vascular patients.

The new complex will be flexibly built to accommodate another four floors in future. The expansion project, the biggest ever announced in Northeastern New York, is being paid for by loans and private donations.

The State Hospital Review and Planning Council approved plans to expand the hospital in 2008 which included building a complex at the front of the patient tower that faces the corner of New Scotland and Myrtle avenues. The project had to be put on hold because of financing issues.

Albany Medical center has also added four new office buildings and a parking garage to its campus in recent years.
