The World’s 11 Best Department Stores 2017

#11MACY'S

HERALD SQUARE, NEW YORK, USA

Macy’s, New York, is usually associated with the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, however, not only does it throw an excellent bash, it also boasts impressive architecture.

From its humble beginnings as ‘R.H Macy Dry Goods’ at Sixth Avenue on the corner of 14th Street, the store has expanded massively.

In 1902, as the business grew and Macy’s began to engulf its neighbouring buildings, it moved uptown to Herald Square and opened its flagship store that we recognise today. Over the years, Macy’s has employed a number of architects to expand and restore the building.

Originally the Herald store consisted of just one building, however it eventually expanded to take up nearly the entire block. Macy’s had the vision that it wanted to become the largest store in the world, which it later became.

In 2012, New York-based firm, Studio V Architecture, was enlisted to provide a full renovation of the Herald Square flagship store. The firm’s design made the store more contemporary whilst in keeping with the original authentic building.

Studio V reprogrammed every floor and completely redesigned the interior of the entire store. It created a brand new ground floor and mezzanine, entrances and restaurants. The project was one of the most complex in New York City.

Renovations were completed in November 2015, but the store continues to be modified to suit the changing tastes of its customers.
