Displaying a combination of the new and the vintage, and with sober hues contrasting with dashes of colour, Irish communication agency Verve’s self-designed new office has a fresh and stimulating feel
Formerly a 20th century candle factory, which was remodeled by architect Gerry Cahill in the 1990s, the new office of event management company Verve has a lively feel, courtesy of creative director John O'Shaughnessy. The building, located in Erne Street, a few minutes away from Merrion Square in Dublin, was selected as home for the company after a search of two-and-a-half years for the ideal office environment.
'We Are Live', the company's motto, beckons with brightly lit marquee letters as one enters the sprawling 9,000 sq ft office space. A standout feature is a 1973 sleek vintage Citroen DS car, which has been refashioned into a cozy meeting space for a group of four. The Citroen belongs to Verve MD Ronan Traynor, who bought it on his 30th birthday, and later stowed it away in his garage when it became too small for his family. The shiny meeting room on wheels epitomizes the brand Verve, as the smell of old leather from its deep cushioned seats exudes the impression of charm and élan.
Behind the charismatic Citroen is a treehouse painted on the wall, right above the silken white desks, which is inspired by 'the places we go in our imagination'. A padded pedestal at each workspace encourages teamwork while maintaining the casual vibe of the office. The polished paneling, strategically placed lights for optimum illumination, ergonomic chairs, transparent cabins, and ideally placed furniture create a sense of space.
Underneath the mezzanine space, a relaxing area has been created for visitors to sit and lounge on a sky-blue Noghuci sofa and ottoman by CA Design. A stencil cut tree behind the sofa adds to the hypnotic backdrop, as does the colourful graffiti painted on the wall near it.
The spotless swerving staircase between the four wheels and the 'We Are Live' sign leads to the first floor mezzanine space which accommodates the agency studio, board room and MD's office, divided by glazed and colourful walls.
A key element here is the transparent boardroom adorned with colourful striped glass panels, which was built from the open plan mezzanine, and is labeled 'Live & Plugged In.' Another transparent room called the 'quiet room' - and inspired by pop-art - offers respite from the buzzing work environment. Stairs going the other way round behind the marquee lit motto, further lend a sense of evenness to the space.
Recently showered with awards in the events category in Ireland, Verve's spanking new office stands as a paradigm for the event company's flair to blend practicality with elegance, and has become, they say, 'one of the coolest offices in the world to work in'.
