Model Gym

A state of the art ladies only gym has been completed by interior designers Marques and Jordy.

How were you commissioned?:
The client wanted to create a state of art ladies only gym, and she wanted something sexy and creative, when she found Yu Jordy Fu's work on a design magazine, she was excited and inspired by Jordy's creativity.

What was the brief from the client and how much were they involved?:
M&J (www.marquesandjordy.com) were commissioned for the entire concept design and build of a brand new fitness club in Fuzhou, China: Model Gym. The brief conceived the first ladies-only, private, one-to-one, appointment-only fitness club, inspired by the glamour and sex appeal of a ‘Victoria’s Secret’ fashion show, for rollout in other locations. Given free reign, M&J developed all aspects of the design scope, including interiors and fitout, branding and product design, as well as furniture design and production. From initiation to completion of build, the project’s tight deadline was just three months. The very day the BIM model was signed off, M&J were on site, and construction drawings ran almost parallel to the build, while they also liaised with the glass, acrylic and stainless steel specialists, etc., to produce all of the artistic elements. ‘For the perfect you’ was the slogan M&J devised, as an aspirational goal of mind and body, to empower the target clientele. The ‘M’ logo echoes form and movement of the female body, as does the black and gold curved façade, which also references the female silhouette. All fittings, fixtures and amenities in the space were custom-designed, to the smallest detail, as visual identity is key in business.

How did the brief affect the materials and design choices?:

How did your previous experience help you with this project?:
M&J specialise in creative architecture and interior designs, our previous experiences gave us the power to create everything from something as big as architecture to small products.

Can you explain the layout of the project:
The 300sq m space comprises the façade, reception, main gym/training area, a lounge, luxury changing rooms, bathrooms, a spa area and back-of-house. The reception is dynamic, with both front and back counters curved. Retail shelves display Model Gym merchandising. The one-to-one training area occupies the majority of the space, with black and white floor patterns, and model silhouettes adorning the walls. The changing rooms are a Hollywood powder-room heaven, with every thoughtful amenity girls need after a workout or massage. All items are custom-designed, to the smallest detail, including mirrors, waste bins, tissue boxes, hairdryers, flatirons, hair accessories, hand-wash bottles, pink slippers, flower-shaped shelves, leaf-shaped recesses and lip-shaped boxes. Main highlights include pink dressing pods, a pink sofa, marble washbasins and a large eyelash mirror. Black with a subtle glow from gold butterfly and star lights, the spa is themed for relaxation. Bathrooms have different scents: One bathroom is pink, with a silver bikini artwork piece in mirrored silver acrylic and an intricate lace, crystal and pearl pattern, whereas the other is black, featuring a high-heel-shaped mirror and a golden butterfly. The shower features custom graphics, organic personal care products, and the towels display the M logo.
