Work underway for £170m Central Park redevelopment in Darlington

Construction work is underway for the £170m Central Park redevelopment scheme in Darlington, which is undertaken by a partnership between Darlington Borough Council, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and Keepmoat Homes.

Located close to the town centre, off Haughton Road near the main railway station, the 30-hectare flagship regeneration scheme of the Darlington Borough Council includes new homes, office and retail space, green and formal open spaces.

The main entrance to the site is located beside Darlington College and Teesside University.

Being developed in phases by Keepmoat Homes, the first phase of the redevelopment includes 332 new homes, offering 20 homes for affordable rent.

It also includes a major new park, water features, ponds, and a local centre at the northern gateway.

The second phase development includes 300,000ft2 office and retail floorspace, a hotel, and 180 new homes.

The business incubation accommodation for new and growing small-to-medium sized businesses will accommodate 52 businesses and the new offices within the Central Park Enterprise Zone.

Construction on the business accommodation will start in spring 2014, which is part-funded by the HCA and funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme.

Roads to the main entrance will be improved and a new roundabout will be created adjacent to the college and university buildings.

"Central Park is Darlington's premier regeneration site and one of the most prominent development opportunities in the North East creating a new community living and working in the heart of the town," said Councillor Bill Dixon, Leader of Darlington Borough Council.

The new development will not only provide high quality new homes but will also create a new contemporary mixed-use community and workplace, said Richard Bass, New Build managing director at Keepmoat.

The redevelopment work began on the site on 16 July 2013.
