Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Design

Winner: Sarah Wigglesworth

Sponsored by Duravit

Sarah Wigglesworth is the director of her London-based architectural practice, which she founded in 1994, and is acknowledged as a pioneering influence in British architecture. Specialising in exploring ecological solutions, her practice has designed buildings for the educational, community, masterplanning, cultural and housing sectors, in particular specialist housing, and has won many awards for its work. Her work draws on careful research, exploring the context behind each project while working closely with clients and users.

The challenges offered by each project results in a wide range of solutions, but the common theme is a highly sensuous use of new materials and a pioneering approach to ecological architecture using low-cost, sustainable and recycled products. The practice aims to find green solutions that are carefully tailored to the ecological commitment and management ability of their occupants rather than providing standardised accreditation.

Sarah writes and speaks about her and the practice’s work, and has authored two books and many articles. She was granted the title Royal Designer for Industry in 2012 and was awarded an MBE in 2003. Between 1997 and 2016 she was professor of architecture at the University of Sheffield where she headed the Dwell research project designing exemplary neighbourhoods and housing for older people. Sarah is also a steering group member of Part W, a group of female architects aiming to improve gender equality across the built environment professions.
