2019 Product of the year
Winner: Rakino by Morgan
Sponsored By IVC
Two chair designs juxtapose soft-sculpted upholstery with a strong, low-line frame. The crisp timber detailing is emphasised by a clean linear structure with the exception of the bowed-back support rail, giving the impression it has been formed by the act of leaning back in the chair. In contrast, the seat is a soft, shell-like form with a crisp, single seam running around its edge. The Rakino tables mirror the distinctive timber detail of the chairs, and have the option of a glass or timber top. Three available heights allow the tables to nest within each other.
The timber frames are produced using CNC machining out of solid beech, walnut or oak. The seat is manufactured from two identical moulded FSC plywood shells, creating the curvature and ergonomic shape for comfort within the vertical wooden frame. All Morgan products are made to contract standards using sustainable EUTR/PEFC timber and first-quality CMHR foams.
Morgan has a tradition of naming its collections after places. Designer Tim Rundle, a London-based New Zealander, explains: ‘Rakino is one of a cluster of small islands in the Hauraki Gulf, the body of water surrounding Auckland’s east coast. There, people are able to escape the busy city, a short boat ride leaving you with a pleasant sense of isolation and calm. A comfortable, low lounge chair in a busy hotel or workplace could, I hope, provide the same feeling.’
